HIV/AIDS is one of the most drastic diseases worldwide leading to premature death and severely affecting the socio-economic structure of entire families, communities and countries. Further, AIDS is not curable. Since it is transmitted predominantly through sexual contact, its prevention is difficult to address as open discussion of sexual practices is discouraged in India.

Treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease. Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but routine access to antiretroviral medication is restricted. Preventionn of infection is the prime startegy due to the difficulty in treating HIV infection. The Integrated Counseling and testing Center for HIV and AIDS will be a key player in the prevention and treatments of this disease.
